strategies, just call it liars. >> don't pay attention to that behind the curtain. >> romney, ryan, 2012. yay! >> well, democrats woke up this morning with their hair on fire think what the hell is going on? why? because they saw polls like this. now, romney with the lead, 49-47 of likely voters in a glial lineup poll. things have swung dramatically. last night i told you colorado and ohio are still comfortably in president obama's camp and if they are nothing to worry about. new poll out, american research group, colorado, romney up by four. oops! >> ohio, as how goes the country goes? oh no! 48-47 romney in the lead in ohio at least according to american research group. all right, well, now conservatives have gotten so confident and cocky, they're calling the election. >> the reason i think it's over of course, i thought it was over last week and the week before. romney's going to win. part of the evidence is this was the most watched debate since 1980 when reagan ran against carter and there was only one debate that year. what happened that year? that was the first time in the last 100 yea

, thanks to mitt romney and paul ryan. why does it happen that 90% of identified republicans according to the gallup poll are white in a country that is now 62% non- hispanic white? looking at this house some moved away towards the democratic party, and what -- looking at how some moved away towards the democratic party. they were very good at taking some of the chaos of the 1960's, using it against the democrats, and convincing these middle- class people that government had been identified with the interests of minorities and the poor and was not working for them anymore and luring them over to become the republican base. that title gets a lot of attention, because we have seen such a rationalized -- such a campaign, particularly as mitt romney and paul ryan use welface that is -- use a version of welfare that is blackface. it may not be working for them. tavis: the subtitle is no less provocative. the romney campaign chose to start this week with that big foreign policy speech. congressman ryan uttered the same words that the obama administration has been weak and libya and syria have been mishandled. here's congressman ryan fakes off on one of the deans of foreign policy for this administration. >> i think a tremendous disadvantage for congressman ryan, as it will be for governor romney when he faces off against the president on foreign affairs. i think joe biden will make sure they don't stray from the truth. in yesterday's speech somewhat unbelievably to me after all the contention about misstatements, governor romney made two significant misstatements again shows a disregard for the facts. one he said, tamron, there was no discussion of terrorism in the 2008 debates. we saw last night on msnbc they played the tape. >> there's tape to prove he wasn't accurate. >> 40 mentions of terrorism in that debate, and he said president obama hasn't signed a single free-trade agreement, when, in fact, he signed three. joe biden won't let him get away with it. going back to domestic policy fo

. if it had gone well, he could have attacked ryan and romney. now he has to defend the president. >> well, i disagree completely because here's the problem with that. this mitt romney's the same mitt romney that we've known for the last six or seven months, the same mitt romney that voters very cautious with the last six or seven months. it's not about defending the president, it's about taking the fight to mitt romney making them defend, that fantasy show he put on during the other debate where he made stuff up and didn't know his own tax plan, making them stick to what they've been the last six or seven months. >> this is where i think paul ryan will have pressure on him and where i expect paul ryan to perform very well. i mean, i found obama's debate performance totally lacking in specifics. we still don't know what his tax plan is or his deficit plan or his budget plan. but paul ryan has become the personification for the democrats of all that is callous and cold and evil about the romney campaign. so ryan now has i think an opportunity to not only explain his plan more importantly romne

, the romney/ryan budget would make it tougher on hard working americans. >> that was the democratic national convention last month. campbell and her group will be kicking off another leg of their anti-poverty tour. this take making stops in ohio. meanwhile, mitt romney still can't give a straight answer on exactly what his tax plan is for the the wealthy. romney campaigned on giving the mega rich a tax cut. his website backs him up. yet at the debate, romney claimed the opposite. >> first of all, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. let me repeat what i said. i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. >> analysis from the nonpartisan tax policy center found romney's plan would cost the country $5 trillion over the the next ten years. romney's friends at fox news say romney doesn't have to explain his fuzzy math. here's chris wallace defending romney's flip-flop to governor martin o'malley. >> the president keeps saying that mitt romney is proposing a $5 trillion tax cut. that's not true. >> chris, wait a minute here. former governor is proposing a cut to income taxes including for the wealthi

for their families. in order to cut taxes for the wealthy. the romney ryan budget would make it even tougher on hard-working americans. >> that sistercy moan campbell speaking at the democratic convention last month. her group, nuns on the bus, will kick off another leg of their anti-pof tir tour. this time making stops in ohio. meanwhile, mitt romney still can't give a straight answer on exactly what his plan is for the wealthy. he campaigned on giving the mega rich a tax cut. his website backs him up. yet at the debate, romney claimed the opposite. >> first of all, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. i'm not looking for a $5 trillion tax cut. let me repeat what i said, i'm not in favor after $5 trillion tax cut. that's not my plan. >> a romney's plan could cost the country $5 trillion over the next five years. his friends at fox news says he doesn't have to explain his fuzzy math. here is chris wallace depending romney's flip-flop to o'malley. >> the president says that mitt romney is proposing a $5 trillion tax cut. that's not true. >> kras, wait a minute here. the governor -- i mean, former gove

. >> in the next debate and the vice presidential debate, when mitt romney or paul ryan is saying something that is not true. they need to call it out. that is not true. you do have a $5 trillion tax cut in your plans. you're not going to cover people's pre-existing conditions in your healthcare plan. you need to say it then and not rely on fax checkers the next day. >> eliot: you can't wait for the story the next day. ryan zerlina is right. you cannot depend upon that. how does the president need to do that,e vince this power and passion and sense of purpose that so clearly was missing. >> i think people want to see that he wants the job. that he wants to fight for them. if you look at it this way if somebody is looking at somebody who won't even stand up for themselves, then what are the chances they're thinking that this person is going to stand up for me? when you're watching obama in this debate you can finally see why it is that he was getting rolled day in and day out by the republicans on capitol hill. you can say hey man that is a guy i would like to be negotiating with. >> eliot:

think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut something that we know is effective and works and helps our kids prepare for the future, but you're going to continue to give subsidies to big oil? that doesn't make sense. so, i do think that there is a seriousness to this conversation and i think biden is the kind of guy who can bring that right balance to the debate. >> all right, so, one thing in an interview, congressman ryan did talk about his nerves playing into effect for thursday. take a look. >> joe biden's one of the best debaters we've seen in modern politics. he's been doing this for 40 years. he ran for president twice, he's the sitting vice president. it's my first time on the national stage like this, so i'm playing -- >> nervous? >> sure, of course i'm a little nervous. everybody's nervous about something like this. i bet joe biden's a little nervous. >> joe, i want to ask you about this. he will be a formidable opponent as far as knowing the inside baseball

. now all this started at a romney/ryan campaign rally when morrison asked the vice-presidential candidate a question. >> okay, she's got a green bay packers shirt. i have to pick on her. i apologize. >> hi. my question is, you know, keep talking about china and jobs and then we talk about the unemployment, but where are the answers in i mean, why aren't you more specific? i heard you -- was it sunday when you were on fox, and you didn't answer his question about how we're going to -- you know, what are your plans. >> oh, yeah. no, look, when you get into math conversation, it can take a little while. let me give you specific answers right now. >> greta: soon after that rally, an obama campaign spokesperson emailed reporters writing this, congressman ryan can't attend his own campaign rallies without being called out for failing to provide specifics about what mitt romney would do if elected. linda morrison joins us. nice to talk to you, linda. >> nice to talk to you, greta. thanks for having me on. >> greta: i'm curious, did you get a specific answer from congressma

to draw contrasts, not only between the president and mitt romney, but also between paul ryan and mitt romney. he knows a lot about paul ryan on medicare, social security and also i was told, foreign policy. he will try to talk about that. >> it's interesting, john, you talk about the generational divide between these two but unlike the presidential debate where you had a former law professor and former ceo, these are two guys with blue collar backgrounds and have spent a lot of time out there campaigning. how noticeable do you think that's going to be? >> it takes one to know one. these are the two beer drinkers in this race. the president and governor romney, no insult intended, can seem a bit elite, detached sometimes. these are more blue collar guys. they're comfortable in an irish pub, in a vfw post. that's their job on the campaign trail, go out and get the working class voters who could be key especially in some of the idaho in west battleground states. stylistically, even though there's an age difference, they are somewhat alike, these two. and that's what's so interesting. lib

in michigan. mr. obama had a ten point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. now, as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with the party make-up of people surveyed, saying it tilts republican compared to september. the romney campaign, on the other hand, says it's pleased with the numbers. joining us now, jim acosta with the romney campaign in newport news, virginia and on the phone, dan lothian with president obama's campaign. jim, you're on the trail with the romney campaign. what's the reaction

, meaning the very real personal costs of the things that romney and ryan are talking about? and i think that's part of what the president needs to be doing. i think it's what the campaign is doing here in this ad is to say, if you're going to make this cut, let's talk about the reality of what that's going to mean for people. you want to, you know, go invade iran, okay. are we all ready to see more caskets coming into dover, delaware? are we really ready to send men and women in uniform to another front in the war? you're going to make all of these cuts and how is that going to add up? it's not going to add up. here are the places where those cuts are going to have to come from. i think bringing it back to real terms, because, again, i think romney won't have the answer essentially. david is right. he has 9 top line -- >> i don't agree with you. romney's answer is very clear, ask me on the 7th of november. >> his answer is always no, it's not. >> exactly. >> because i said to. >> karen, david, and richard, thank you both. thank you all. next, paul ryan can't stand the heat and it may on

. >> paul ryan just days before the debate last week directly contradicted romney. ryan said lowering the tax rates was more important than anything else, including getting rid of those deductions to pay for them supposedly. let's watch. >> what's most important to romney, what would he scale back on the 20% tax cut for the wealthy? would he scale back and say, okay, we're going to have to raise taxes for the middle class? i guess the question is what's most important to him in his tax reform plan -- >> keeping tax rates down. by lowering tax rates, people keep more of the next dollar they earn. >> that's more important -- >> that's more important than anything. >> in other words, it is, in fact, a tax cut. it's not a tax caught offset by deductions. it's to get the tax rates down from 35% to 38%. that's the goal he said. >> romney said something interesting in the debate where he basically said nobody can say that my tax cut is going to add to the deficit if i say it won't. well, in fact, everybody who has looked at the plan says it will add to the deficit. there isn't a single credi

ryan. it's the entitlements, it's the auto bailout, and i think also it's the issues around romney. perhaps the income taxes, his 47% comments. this is going to be, i think, a full-throated joe biden thursday night in kentucky, and i think what they also want to do, the biden folks, is try to get ryan into the weeds. they want to get ryan in a conversation on math, to get to the sort of question as to whether or not the romney tax plan adds up. the ryan folks i talked to want to keep it at 20,000 feet. they want ryan to stick with the romney-like message of jobs and the economy, sound centrist, don't get too far out there in some sort of ideological makers versus takers debate. >> everybody that's ever worked for many years in an industrial company or any kind, joan, fears the guy like paul ryan to show up. he comes in, and he's the efficiency expert. he's the cost cutter. he comes in looking for people to fire, you know? everybody hates him. can he make him look like that guy or can he wag his tail and seem like he's the cute younger guy and get away with that? >> i don't think he
